Abstract

“Ecotoxicological effects of PPCPs (Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products) and microplastics on the ecophysiology of the quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis)”

This research combines environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology by investigating the individual and combined effects of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and microplastics on the quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis). Particular focus is placed on environmentally aged microplastics and their interactions with PPCPs. The quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) serves as a freshwater model organism to assess the ecophysiological effects of these emerging contaminants. Due to its increasing distribution in European freshwater systems, the quagga mussel provides an ecologically relevant model for studying contaminant uptake and effects.
